Won't using a synthetic oil damage my seals?
FAQs - Switching From Petroleum to Synthetic

Q. Won't using a synthetic oil damage my seals?

 A. No! When synthetics were first introduced, some did not have the additives necessary to prevent seal shrinkage and as a result some oil was leaked. That is no longer the case. AMSOIL has all the proper adiditives to make sure that your seals stay in good condition. The best thing to do is to start using AMSOIL at low mileage so it keeps your seals in good shape. If you have a high mileage vehicle, switching to AMSOIL may unmask a problem with seal damage caused by petroleum oils, therefore causing your engine to leak a bit of oil past the seals, that's not to say that AMSOIL is causing the damage, on the contrary, the damage was already caused by petroleum based oils. Since petroleum oils have a higher volatility rate (burn off) and non uniform molecules, they leave sludge and varnish deposits that form around the seals and can plug them up. When you switch to a good quality synthetic like AMSOIL, the detergents in the oil do a better job of cleaning these deposits, therefore unmasking the problem. Now if you run AMSOIL long enough, it may lubricate and expand the seals to a point where they fill in the gaps, but if not they will need to be replaced.
